Are Boss Runbacks in Silksong Outdated Game Design?

The Boss Runback is a classic bit of game design, but complaints about the punishing runbacks in Hollow Knight: Silksong have reignited the argument about whether or not they’re actually even fun. Does Silksong gameplay prove that Boss Runbacks are outdated and frustrating game design and therefore should be cancelled, or do Boss Runbacks actually provide valuable opportunities to properly learn and finesse the game’s mechanics? After all, it’s not just Silksong that features brutal runbacks! Games like Dark Souls, Sekiro, Nioh and even old school MMORPGs like World of Warcraft have them, so perhaps runbacks are something that will never go away. What’s your opinion on Boss Runbacks?
