Dune: Awakening devs had to get permission from the Herberts for this.

In Dune: Awakening, players can’t use laser weapons against personal shields due to a lore-friendly safety mechanism.

This rule prevents nuclear explosions, a lore-accurate consequence of lasers hitting Holtzman shield fields.

Dune: Awakening creative director Joel Bylos is deeply committed to the Dune lore

"if you aim a lasgun at a shield in our game, it just turns the lasgun off automatically,"

Letting players blast away with their lasguns loosey goosey just wasn’t going to be an option.

That left one option: getting permission from the Herbert loremasters to carve out an in-universe exception.
