In a recent interview, former Starfield system designer Bruce Nesmith, stated "space is inherently boring."
The vast emptiness of space makes for a cool backdrop for a number of stories, but as an explorable place, it isn’t the most exciting. Bruce arrived at this same conclusion, and correctly identified that planets are what is needed to break up that emptiness, but "when the planets start to feel very samey, and you don’t start to feel the excitement on the planets, that’s to me where it falls apart."
Starfield had plenty of detractors around it’s launch period that leveled criticisms against the procedurally generated worlds that started to feel repetitive as time went on. It sounds like Bruce despite previously working at Bethesda agreed with this critique.
