Part Moody Masterpiece, part Tedious Trek, Hell is Us is an incredible journey through a supernaturally affected conflict zone where the terrestrial horrors of real, corporeal war collide with the arcane horrors of literal hell. There are hints of Death Stranding’s purgatory-hopping otherworldliness here, but it is very much a brutal survival game with lots of violence and an endless to-do list with dubious checkpointing or signposting. And this makes things tricky: because, while we are generally in favour of games being less handholdy and more trusting of a player’s ability to figure things out, Hell is Us often feels like an overcorrection into the downright obtuse. Hey, we’re just asking games to stop giving us easy answers, we’re not asking them to stop giving us clues!
This semi open-world exploration shooter looks to be one of the boldest survival games on PS5, Xbox Series S/X and PC this year. Find out why in this Hell is Us review!
