
Why do some people invert Y? Is it because they played Microsoft Flight Simulator as a child? Is it because they grew up playing classic shooters such as Goldeneye 007 and Timesplitters? Or is it something even more fundamental than that? According to new research, inverters and non-inverters perceive 3D space slightly differently, and whether you invert look or leave it on normal may have nothing to do with your gaming history.
But does it really matter? Standardised support for inverted camera paved the way for the suite of accessibility options that we have become used to seeing in today’s games. As long as game studios continue to recognise that there is no "default" gamer, that can only be a good thing: for inclusivity, for representation, because it’s the right thing to do, and also because it’s frankly bad business to assume otherwise.
